Overview
The Thyroid Gland is the largest endocrine gland in the human body. It is placed on the trachea below the larynx. Its two lobes are connected by a cord in the shape of the English letter ‘H’. The weight of both lobes in a fully grown person is 15 – 20 grams and its color in the living body is pinkish brown.
This gland originates (Embryologically) from the tissues of the digestive system of the fetus, hence it is not functional without the help of the digestive system. This gland itself synthesizes three hormones and secrete it in the blood.
- Thyroxine / Tetra Idotyrosine
- Tri-iodothyronine
- Calcitonin
Function
The main function of the first two hormones is to stimulate the body’s tissues for basic function (Basal Metabolic Function).
The metabolic rate of all the tissues of the body decreases by about 40-50% when the thyroid gland is completely inactive (complete lack of thyroid secretion).
In the same way, the metabolic rate of tissues increases by 60-100% when hypersecretion occurs.
The functioning of this gland tissue determines the Thyroid stimulating Hormone / TSH, served by the anterior pituitary gland. The critical levels of thyroid and tri-iodothyronine must remain in the blood, so their volume acts to prevent or prevent thyroid stimulating hormones.
Suprachiasmatic nucleus – the TSH Releasing Factor of the hypothalamus in the brain is responsible for secreting or preventing secretion of thyroid stimulating hormone from the anterior pituitary. Thus, the amount of thyroxine in the blood is thyroid stimulating hormone and T.S.H. The releasing factor regulates the secretion capacity of all three thyroid glands. Thyroid are of two types —
